BLACKPINK HANBOK IN COACHELLA_WEEK1 : OUWR x KUMDANJE
On April 15, BLACKPINK made history as the first K-pop group to headline Coachella, one of the three largest music festivals in the United States, California. For their powerful intro performance of “Pink Venom”, the members took the stage in custom-designed outfits by OUWR x KUMDANJE.
As the first-ever K-pop headliner at Coachella, BLACKPINK was committed to showcasing the beauty of Korean culture on a global stage. To make a striking visual impact in their opening scene, their outer garments were designed to be both elegant and bold.
The design drew inspiration from the "Cheollik", a traditional Korean overcoat worn from the Goryeo to Joseon dynasties, frequently used as ceremonial attire for military officials due to its fluid yet structured silhouette. The garments featured a jeogori-style fitted bodice crafted from traditional Korean silk embroidered with intricate hand-stitched patterns, while the lower portion incorporated sheer pleated fabric embellished with contemporary beading details. This fusion of historical textiles and modern materials symbolized the harmony between heritage and modernity, perfectly aligning with BLACKPINK’s global influence. Each member’s attire was enriched with symbolic Korean motifs embroidered into the silk fabric by KUMDANJE: Shipjangsaeng (Lisa), Dancheong (Rosé), Moran (Rosé) and lastly, Nature - Star (Jennie). Additionally, OUWR’s signature “Cheoma” pattern was incorporated using gold foil techniques on the hap’i (traditional royal shoulder sash) and waist belts. The Cheoma pattern, inspired by Korean tiled rooftops and wooden eaves, seamlessly blended into the stage design, which featured a hanok-style backdrop, elevating the performance's visual impact.
RIMM, an award-winning jewelry brand that has represented K-design excellence in Paris, Japan, and Hong Kong, contributed exquisite handcrafted accessories. Each outfit was adorned with RIMM’s “Nabillera” brooch, featuring hand-cut mother-of-pearl inlays inspired by the Shipjangsaeng motif. This piece, which won the Good Design Award’s Gold Prize, reinterprets the traditional Korean najeonchilgi (mother-of-pearl inlay) technique in a contemporary form, with double-layered wings creating an intricate three-dimensional effect.
It was a tremendous honor for OUWR and KUMDANJE to create these extraordinary pieces for BLACKPINK’s historic Coachella performance, a moment that allowed the world to witness the timeless beauty of Hanbok and Korean heritage on one of the biggest global stages.
